Guide to taking good property photos

You can post up to 5 photos to your property advert.

Photos are really what will sell your council or housing association property to people who may be interested in swapping and therefore it is important to get this right.  Ideally you want 1 or 2 external shots and several internal pictures.

Getting ready

Before you get your camera out and start taking photos, it’s a good idea to prepare your home in a way that’ll present it well to viewers. It is essential to clear up any mess or clutter inside your house and remove or hide anything unsightly inside or outside.

Remove any obstacles that get in the way of the front door and don’t leave your car in the shot.

Taking pictures

The pictures will be used on the web, so ideally take pictures at the lower setting on your camera such as VGA or 1MP mode because when you scale photos down, they can become blurry.

Tips

  • Avoid overcast or rainy weather, take pictures on a sunny day, making your pictures brighter
  • Make sure the sun/window is behind you to avoid any glare
  • Try taking photos in the morning or late afternoon to capture some of that golden light, however, avoid having shadows falling over the front of the property
  • Zoom in on features that add flair or character to the property, like window boxes, shutters, stone paths et
  • Include photos of the surrounding street to show off your property’s curb appeal
  • Consider photographing the view
  • Use the flash when taking pictures indoors even on sunny days

Uploading them to your advert

Once you have taken the pictures it is time to add them to your advert.  This can be done when setting up the advert or through the edit link when you are in the my adverts section of the site.

If the images are too big then follow these instructions for reducing their size.
